Sen. Liu Celebrates Civics Week In NE Queens Schools

In recognition of NYC’s 6th Annual Civics Week, NYS Senator John Liu, Chair of the NYC Education Committee, visited schools in Northeast Queens to speak with students about the importance of being engaged in their communities.

Throughout Civics Week, elected officials visit public school students in K-12 throughout the city where they participate in classroom activities and events aimed at empowering students to become proactive contributors to their community. Civics Week took place from March 11 to 15. Activities include Student Voter Registration Drives, Civics for All Poster Contests and more.

During Civics Week, Senator Liu visited the following Northeast Queens schools:

  • Adrien Block IS 25 in Flushing. Senator Liu spoke to students about civic engagement and the democratic process.
  • PS 188Q in Bayside. Liu joined Council Member Linda Lee and Queens Supreme Court Judge Karen Lin to swear in the Student Council.
  • MS 216Q in Fresh Meadows. Liu joined Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, Council Member Christine Liu, and Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado. During the school’s Meet Your Civic Leaders Day, students learned about the election process, policy creation, local and state government.

Senator Liu stated, “The youth of today are more active and engaged in the issues than ever before, so it is essential they learn to think critically and empathetically about their politics and engage in healthy civic debate. Clearly, their interest in the issues affecting their community and the world extends far beyond just Civics Week, and we are fortunate here in Queens to have such eager and thoughtful participation by our students of all ages.”
