Savage Sicko

Savage Sicko turns the Astoria restaurant scene upside down with its fresh, inventive, urban vegan fare with a Latin flair. Don’t let the name fool you, this cozy restaurant and garden offers delicious, healthy meals, performance press juice drinks, shakes, teas, and coffees six days a week, closed on Mondays.

Partners Stephanie Centurion and Alex Ayala bring their passion for healthy eating to Savage Sicko and the “Savage” ethos is represented by their shark logo, while “Sicko” refers to determination and drive to inspire you. The eclectic dining rooms are decorated with tidy tables and retro armchairs in the back for casual sipping and chatting. The spacious garden out back will be an ideal oasis in warm weather to enjoy a healthy meal al fresco.

Start with a “Mocktail” such as the mojito mocktail, passion fruit martini mocktail, or gin-free g&t flavored with cardamom, cucumber, lemon, rosemary, and tonic water. You can also bring your own wine or beer if you like. We started with some of their tempting appetizers such as the “Shark Nachos” composed of organic tortilla chips piled high with black beans, soyrizo (soy-based chorizo), guacamole, radish, and pickled jalapeno ($15). NY cauliflower wings are tempura fried cauliflower florets in spicy Buffalo sauce with vegan Ranch dressing that we swiftly devoured. Colombian style empanadas are filled with soyrizo and vegan cheddar cheese that make a nice snack any time of day. Guacamole loco is mashed to order with onion, cilantro, lime juice, and edamame with corn tortilla chips to scoop it all up. Savage Sicko’s Urban Latin vegan menu borrows from many Latino countries, and the flags next to menu items denote the dish’s origin. From Mexico comes the Cholo Mac & Cheese…a decidedly light and tasty version of the American classic, topped with a bit of avocado and pico de gallo. Fajitas picudas are made with a mélange of sweet peppers, broccoli, cauliflower, grilled tofu, and Portobello mushroom for a hearty and satisfying dish. I dove into “The Great Savage Burger” and couldn’t believe it wasn’t made of beef. This meatless burger had authentic flavor and texture, topped with guacamole, lettuce, tomato, and vegan mayonnaise with a side of sweet potato fries, French fries, or fried yuca. From Peru comes the Inca ceviche substituting hearts of palm and jackfruit for the seafood, with sweet peppers, onion, chickpeas, and zesty lemon dressing ($18). Paraguayan Gurani Eggplant Milanesa is crispy, breaded eggplant served with spinach, tomato salad, and lemon dressing.

Savage Sicko offers healthy bowls for the perfect, healthy lunch or dinner. My friend shared her Chicano burrito bowl with me, chock full of organic brown rice, tofu, guacamole, crunchy tortilla strips, black beans, and pickled jalapeno with lemon-pepper vinaigrette ($15). The textures and flavors burst in our mouths and we were both pleasantly full after. Likewise, the Vegan protein bowl is full of quinoa, black beans, Portobello mushroom, broccoli, cucumber, and cauliflower with zesty lemon-cilantro vinaigrette for a bright, fresh taste. Classic spinach salad is tossed with pecans, dried cranberries, and balsamic dressing.

Sweeten it up with a wedge of chocolate layer cake, tres leches cake, or a healthy Acai bowl made with Brazil’s antioxidant acai berries and a dollop of almond butter. Press juices explode with nutrients such as the “Savage Skin Glow” pressed with orange, pineapple, celery, apple, beet, and lemon juices. “Mission Slim-Possible” combines orange, celery, and pineapple juices with avocado, green tea, and superfood powder that will keep you going for hours. Adults and kids alike will gulp down the fruity shakes such as the “Shark Bite” with banana, almond milk, cinnamon, and peanut butter.

A percentage of proceeds from Savage Sicko will be donated to shark research and conservation, a cause that the owners are passionate about. If you’re passionate about eating healthy and delicious meals and drinks, walk on over to Savage Sicko for a great lunch or dinner, six days a week. Find them on Instagram and Facebook too.
