Orchestra Gets New Conductor, Auditions Planned

The Queensborough Orchestra at Queensborough Community College, under the musical direction of conductor George Rothman, will be holding open auditions on Thursday, Oct. 18 at 6 p.m.


"We are looking to reach out to the surrounding communities, both in terms of audience development and in cultivating the Orchestra’s membership," Rothman said. "We know that there are highly talented musicians in the area, and we would like to hear from them, particularly string, brass, woodwind and percussion players."

Rothman has received increasing recognition as one of the most serious and gifted conductors of his generation. Co-founder and music director of New York’s Riverside Symphony, Rothman has won consistent praise from New York’s foremost critics. His extensive repertory ranges from the early Baroque to works by today’s most important living composers, including many lesser-known masterworks. A Manhattan native, Rothman trained at the Manhattan School of Music, the Julliard School and the Tanglewood Music Center, where he worked with Leonard Bernstein and Seiji Ozawa. His recordings of contemporary orchestral works for Bridge and New World records have earned international praise. In addition, his most recent recording was nominated for a 2000 Grammy Award.


The Queensborough Orchestra, in residence at Queensborough Community College, is offered through QCC’s Department of Music and presents an annual program of concerts. Frequently featuring renowned guest instrumentalists. This season’s fall concert will feature guest soloist guitarist Oren Fader, who will join the orchestra in Joaquin Rodrigo’s Flamenco-inspired work, Concierto de Aranjuez, Schubert’s Fifth Symphony, and two works by Frederick Delius.


The college is located at 56th Avenue and Springfield Boulevard, Bayside (Exit 29 on the L.I.E.), and is accessible by public transportation: No. 7 train to Main Street, Flushing, followed by the Q27 bus to Springfield Boulevard.
