Open Letter to Julie Won

Candidate for City Council, District 26

Dear Ms. Won:

I have reviewed your three top issues and your priorities that define your approach to running for the office of City Council member for District 26. I am writing to urge you to recognize that while bike lanes and WiFi are important, many of us are facing the ominous threat of a potential loss of affordable housing, jobs and the security of a future in our community. I commend you for identifying the need to save small businesses that are vital to our collective quality of life. It is also important to note the impact of rezoning votes in the City Council, privatization of public housing, tax abatements for real estate interests, rising taxes for businesses and home owners, loss of public lands to developers and how all of this directly affects our future and the quality in our respective communities.

If you are elected to represent our community, you will be accountable to represent a broad array of issues and priorities. I hope you will prepare yourself by getting to know the constituents in Ravenswood Houses, Dutch Kills, Sunnyside and all the other neighborhoods that make up the district. The role of a City Council Member is very important for its ability to give a voice to those of us who live and work in the district. I believe that by identifying yourself “as an immigrant and daughter of a nail technician” you already know something about the struggles we face. Please acquaint yourself with the Justice For All Coalition, the Senior Centers, treatment programs, shelters, cultural organizations and youth programs to gain even more understanding of those you want to serve.

Dr. Sharon M. Cadiz
