Lime & Salt Bar and Restaurant is a festive little spot conveniently located on Queens Blvd. in Rego Park. The lively bar buzzes with music and laughter and the sounds of the barman shaking up margaritas and inventive cocktails. The walls are adorned with colorful murals and street art creating the perfect environment in which to enjoy the Modern Mexican cuisine served here at reasonable prices.
Lime & Salt opened in February by brothers Obet and Isidro Juarez, who is also the Chef. Obet runs the front of the house and the duo has two decades of experience in the restaurant business. His attention to detail and Isidro’s exceptionally fresh and flavorful cuisine combine for a wonderful meal in a casual setting for couples, friends, and families (kid’s menu available).
Start with a freshly shaken margarita, straight up, frozen, or flavored with fruit puree such as mango and passionfruit. The Rego Sunset is gin-based with passionfruit, Aperol, and fresh lime juice for a refreshing mood changer. The Pink Lady mixes tequila with hibiscus syrup, lemon juice, pineapple, and aromatic bitters, and there are Mexican, European, and American beers on hand as well as your favorite wines.
Lime & Salt appetizers will whet your appetite for more with kudos for the house calamari, crispy outside, tender inside, and a kick from chili peppers and a sprinkle of cilantro ($13). Patatas bravas are a nod to Spanish tapas, served golden brown with habanero aioli for dipping ($9). House wings are great to nibble on at the bar or at your table, served with your choice of BBQ sauce, Buffalo, sweet chili, or mango habanero sauce. Nachos are popular too for sharing, loaded with black beans, chipotle cheese sauce, sriracha, pico de gallo and guacamole with your choice of meat on top. Grilled corn called “esquites” is topped with Cotija cheese and a sprinkling of chipotle.
Chef Isidro’s tacos, burritos, and fajitas are some of the best in town, all made to order with the freshest ingredients. Tacos are made with fine corn tortillas and over-stuffed with either tender chicken, chorizo sausage, marinated steak, shrimp, pork carnitas, or blackened fish and house-made guacamole, pico, salsa verde, and shredded radish ($14-16). These hand-held tacos are addictive… be warned! The same is true for the tightly packed burritos full of rice, black beans, pico, guacamole, sour cream, Cotija cheese and your choice of meat or shrimp, served with Adobo fries.
Besides the classic Mexican treats you’re familiar with, Lime & Salt creates top-notch entrées such as the pan-seared salmon, perfectly cooked with beurre blanc sauce, served with vegetable quinoa and mango avocado salad. NY Strip steak is expertly grilled to order with herb butter, fragrant chimichurri, broccoli rabe, carrots and mushrooms for a satisfying meal. I hear the roasted, free-range chicken is extraordinary, served with pan gravy, fingerling potatoes, baby carrots, and shitake mushrooms ($21). I’ll be back for that dish and the chicken enchiladas with house-made mole.
After all the savory flavors at Lime & Salt, finish your meal with sweet, delicate apple tart with vanilla ice cream, chocolate molten lava cake with ice cream, Mom’s churros dusted with cinnamon, or cool tres leches cake. Mexican liqueurs like Tia Maria and Kahlua are perfect with your dessert.
Lunch at Lime & Salt is served Tuesday through Sunday where you can enjoy all their tacos and burritos as well as an 8-ounce Angus beef burger or a buttermilk chicken sandwich with bacon, avocado, and chipotle mayo on a fluffy bun. An ice-cold beer will certainly help wash it all down.
