Fight Vandalism

A copy of the following letter was received by the Gazette.

The Honorable George Onorato

The State Senate

State of New York-Albany

Legislative Office Building, Room 315

Albany, New York 12247

Dear Senator Onorato:

Thank you for your letter dated July 28, 2000, addressed to George Warrington, concerning your constituents from Astoria, Queens. Mr. Warrington has requested that I respond on his behalf. I apologize for the delay in responding to your concerns.

I was disturbed to learn that your constituents were subjected to property damage from vandals who illegally accessed Amtrak property to commit their crimes on the surrounding area. As you may be aware, the location where these crimes occurred is a raised viaduct some 200 feet in the air. I have been assured that fencing and employee access gates in the area are intact and properly secured.

Amtrak’s Chief of Police, Ron Frazier, has also informed me that Amtrak police forces are actively investigating this criminal act and have increased their patrols of the area around the clock. Further, they have met with the Commanding Officer of the Anti-Crime Unit of the 114th Precinct, New York City Police Department, and will work closely with his unit at addressing any problems in the area.

I very much appreciate your efforts in bringing this matter to my attention and pledge Amtrak’s continued cooperation on matters of mutual concern.

Sincerely,

E.S. Bagley, Jr.

President-Northeast Corridor, Amtrak

Wish Butler Luck

To The Editor:

I am sure we speak for many when we wish Assemblyman Denis J. Butler the best of luck and good health on his retirement.

He has served his community with pride and true dedication and will surely be missed.

It was our privilege to have him for our Assemblyman and as our friend.

We wish the best to Denis, Mary and his family. Enjoy.

Replies To Letter

To The Editor:

Eat your words Jay Barnes of Massachusetts (Don’t Vote For Hillary, Oct. 4th). Who are you to tell people who to vote for? This is why we have elections to choose the people of our choice. What do you think, that your man is squeaky clean? His track record stinks. Of course Hillary stood by her husband, don’t you expect your family to stick by you if need be? Get with it. What do we know about Lazio? He came out of nowhere after the Mayor [Rudolph Giuliani] dropped out. This is America, we have a choice, and one of them is keeping our vote private.

Sincerely,

M. Carr

Cunningham Park Needs Fixup

A copy of the following letter was received by the Gazette.

Congressman Joseph Crowley

82-11 37th Avenue

Jackson Heights, NY 11372

Dear Congressman Crowley:

I recently read the front page article in the Western Queens Gazette on August 30th about your call for the U.S. Senate to pass the multi billion environmental bill designed to maintain existing urban parks and public areas.

The members of the West Cunningham Park Civic Association have been pressuring for the past year to obtain money to renovate the very heavily used Cunningham Park. The enclosed articles will tell you of our concerns and wants.

Cunningham Park is used by neighborhood individuals and groups almost year ‘round The Big Apple Circus, the NY Philharmonic, the Metropolitan Opera, numerous ethnic concerts, family picnics, fraternal group parties, religious meetings are but a few of the events which cause wear and tear on the park virtually, year ‘round by people from all over Queens.

Groups from western Queens come here for parties and events. We support the Conservation and Reinvestment Act (CARA) in the hope that some of the money can be used for Cunningham Park. While Councilman Sheldon Leffler, and other local legislators, have provided some money, much more is needed to repair Cunningham Park.

Yours truly,

Robert I.Harris, President,

West Cunningham Park Civic Association

Why Exclude Nader?

To The Editor:

Ralph Nader, the Green Party candidate, continues to be excluded from the Presidential debates by the Republican and Democratic-controlled Commission on Presidential Debates. American voters will be deprived from hearing Nader’s positions opposing the death penalty and favoring national health insurance and public financing for campaigns. The CPD even refused to let Nader sit in the audience for the Oct. 3rd debate, though he had a ticket. Polls show most Americans want Nader to be included. This is democracy?

Sincerely,

Gary Sandman
