March went out like a lion
Awakin’ up the water in the bay;
Then April cried and stepped aside,
And along came pretty little May!
May was full of promises
But she didn’t keep ‘em quick enough forsome
And the crowd of doubtin’ Thomases
Was predictin’ that the summer’d nevercome…
But it’s comin’ by dawn,
We can feel it come,
You can feel it in your heart
You can see it in the ground
You can see it in the trees
You can smell it in the breeze…
Fresh and alive and gay and young
June is a love song, sweetly sung… (“June isBusting Out All Over,” Carousel, Rodgers &Hammerstein, 1956)
We keep hearing mentally the perfect song for the season, “June Is Busting Out All Over,” and how appropriate it is, when our first June issue comes out on June 1. We can’t help but go back to the old days in our minds, when summer was a time for rejoicing.
Seems like only a couple of weeks ago we were anxiously awaiting March to go (out like a lamb, which it didn’t), and suddenly, June is here!
Even though Carousel is set in a sleepy New England fishing village, we have our own correlations here in the big beautiful city! Especially in Queens, which is doubly blessed with the epic beauty of nature and city sophistication and convenience.
We celebrate the glorious beaches, swimming and hot sand; sunshine, flowers and greenery everywhere; fireflies, butterflies and even the sound of buzzing bees that brings a happy feeling. There’s all kinds of fresh fruit that is so sweet, juicy, colorful and abundant. There’s no snow to navigate, just make a call and meet up with some pals to share in the enjoyment of everyone’s favorite season. We have SO many positive memories and anticipation for summer. School’s out, the days are long and warm, the ice cream truck is back, there’s cookouts, trips, time off, longer days, a leisurely pace, “going steady,” cute and colorful outfits not hidden by coats, blockbuster movies in theaters, baseball and “soda and pretzels and beer,” to quote Nat King Cole (“Those Lazy- Hazy-Crazy Days of Summer”).
We are so looking forward to it! Get out there and enjoy it all – Happy Summer Everyone!
