Jamie Dimon, visited his native borough on March 11 to address over 200 Queens College students and faculty. CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez and Executive Director of the New York Jobs CEO Council (Jobs Council) Kiersten Barnet took the stage to kick off the event before Queens College President Frank H. Wu sat down for a fireside chat with Jamie Dimon. The two discussed leadership, talent development, and the collaboration needed between the public and private sectors to drive job creation.
“Opportunities are not always granted to those who really need them,” said Chairman and CEO of JPMorgan Chase, Jamie Dimon. “We have the responsibility to ensure that students, especially from under-resourced communities, have the access to learn the in-demand skills needed to land them a job after graduation.”
Launched in 2020, Jobs Council represents the commitment of CEOs of the largest employers in New York to support jobseekers access family-sustaining jobs. These leaders collectively pledged to hire 100,000 low-income New Yorkers, with a focus on, including 25,000 from the City University of New York (CUNY). Since 2022, the Jobs Council has hired nearly 30,000 jobseekers within the target group, with nearly 6,000 of those from CUNY. The CEO Speaker Series supports this mission, connecting influential business leaders with students and faculty at the City’s public education institution.
“By connecting our students with opportunities that help them launch the careers of their dreams, the New York Jobs CEO Council and its partners have proven to be committed supporters of CUNY and our efforts to drive economic and social mobility for people of all backgrounds,” said CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez. “Together, we are strengthening and diversifying the city’s workforce to lift New York.”
The Jobs Council and Queens College have been working together to better understand what students need to be successful in their job search. With most Fortune 500 companies recruiting their early career talent from internship programs, it has become crucial for students to become better prepared for the workforce early on in their college experience.
