It’s in Queens (Spicy, Hot + Very Cool)

Weekly highlights by the Queens Tourism Council team
SEPTEMBER 11
It’s time to spin a yarn, spill the beans, and share the good word. Queens Theatre launches Our Story on Sept. 18. The free funniness then returns monthly. Local raconteurs share some of their solo works, including their favorite words, wackiest ideas, and craziest characters. The routines are live with no replays on social media — so clear your calendar.
Last week, MoMA PS1 partially opened and hosted Warm Up Returns, an eight-hour celebration of NYC music, in its courtyard. Next week, the Long Island City museum will open completely to the public and unveil two thought-provoking exhibitions: Marking Time: Art in the Age of Mass Incarceration and Rashid Johnson: Stage.
Jamaica Performing Arts Center presents the Southeast Queens Jam Fest on Sept. 12. Seven local musicians will delight in such genres as Hip Hop, Jazz, R&B, and African Percussion during this free concert. They’ll be on JPAC’s front lawn at 153-10 Jamaica Ave., but the fun will also live-stream for those who prefer to watch via Internet.
Can Joey D be in two places at the same time? Yes, if it involves fine dining. Queens Tourism Council Official Foodie Joe DiStefano serves up an article on delicious cemitas and arabes at Tlaxcal Kitchen in Jackson Heights today. He appears again in the new-and-improved It’s In Queens podcast, talking about — what else? — great borough eats.
It’s hard to believe, but the computer dates to the 19th century, when an English professor designed a device that didn’t work. Learn more when the Queens Historical Society streams It’s Electric: The History of Computers on Sept. 12. This virtual exhibition shows how rare, room-sized machines evolved into handheld gadgets that rule today’s world.
James Baldwin won just about every high honor in the literary world, including Guggenheim and MacDowell Fellowships and the George Polk Memorial Award. The prolific author and playwright’s work is the main focus at Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning’s Free Online Reading & Discussion Series on Sept. 15. It then continues monthly.
