It’s In Queens! (July 2 to July 8)


The New York Hall of Science is back. Carnivals are back. Fireworks are back. And if that’s not enough, the piping plovers are back, too! Other upcoming Queens activities include skateboarding, camping, musicals, meditation, mystery, and pest control.

 

July 2, Free First Friday, 11 am. On the first Friday of every month, admission is free. However, visits must be scheduled in advance until further notice due to the COVID pandemic. The Noguchi Museum, 9-01 33rd Rd., LIC.

 

July 3, Last Call: The Shutdown of NYC Bars, 1 pm. The world premiere of a documentary on Covid’s heartbreaking impact on the hospitality industry that features Queens businesses and residents. In-person screening at 1 pm and virtual showing at 8 pm. Queens Theatre, 14 United Nations Ave. S., Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

 

July 3, The Young Girls of Rochefort, July 9. This 1967 musical stars Catherine Deneuve, Françoise Dorléac, Gene Kelly, and other legends of the era. A fair comes to a sleepy seaside town, and twin sisters Delphine and Solange (real-life siblings Deneuve and Dorléac) find love and adventure in one elaborate song and dance sequence after another. Screens on July 3 at 1 pm and July 9 at 3 pm. Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Ave., Astoria’s Kaufman Arts District.

 

July 3, Family Paint and Sip, 1 pm. An afternoon of outdoor painting and lemonade. Learn about 19th century still-life painting and how long it took to sit for a portrait, while creating a masterpiece to take home. King Manor Museum, 150-03 Jamaica Ave., Jamaica.

 

July 3, Meet NYC’s Piping Plovers, 11 am. Piping plovers love the beach, and these tiny shorebirds fly more than 700 miles to nest in Rockaway every year. Meet the NYC Parks team that monitors this endangered species and other nesting shorebirds. Then enjoy a family friendly, self-guided scavenger hunt with prizes. Meet at Beach 84th Street at the boardwalk, Rockaway.

 

July 4, Macy’s Salutes Those Who Serve, Dusk. More than 65,000 shells and other effects shoot into the night sky from five barges on the East River just west of Long Island City. The spectacle should last 25 minutes, and audiences can expect all types of pyrotechnics, including fountains, parachutes, and sparkling waterfalls. Various Western Queens spots.

 

July 4, Family Camping, 6 pm. Pitch a tent and enjoy the great outdoors and family bonding. Space is limited so families are chosen by lottery. Fort Totten, vicinity of Cross Island Parkway, Totten Avenue and 15th Road, Bayside.

 

July 6, Skateboarding Clinic, 9 am. Youngsters learn basic skills, proper technique, foot placement, safety, and etiquette. Another clinic is on July 8. Forest Park Skate Park, Woodhaven Boulevard and Forest Park Drive.

 

June 6, Sunset Meditation, 7 pm. Designed for all experience levels and practices, this session includes mindful breathing and walking, gentle optional stretching, and loving-kindness meditation. Socrates Sculpture Park, 32-01 Vernon Blvd., LIC.

 

July 7, Astoria Park Carnival, July 11. Dream Catcher, Sky Hawk, Wisdom Himalaya, Dream Wheel, and Starship 3000 are among the possible rides. The fun runs from 4 pm to 11 pm on July 7-9 and noon to 11 pm on July 10-11. Astoria Park, vicinity of Hoyt Avenue North and 19th Street.

 

July 8, Science’s Grand Reopening, 10 am. After being closed due to Covid, the New York Hall of Science re-opens with new exhibitions and special attention to safety protocols. NYSCI, 47-01 111th St., Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

 

July 8, Second Helping, 7 pm. Part comedy, part tragedy, stand-up comedian Kelli Dunham rifts on how her extreme mid-western reliance met the death of two partners in a row during this virtual Queens Theatre performance. It’s part of the ongoing Stonewall Legacy project.

 

July 8, Three Cozy Mystery Authors, 4 pm. As part of Queens Public Library’s ongoing Literary Thursdays virtual program, three authors discuss love cozies and provide an inside look at a special type of mystery. They are the following: Terrie Farley Moran, who penned “Murder She Wrote: Killing in a Koi Pond” and the “Read ’Em and Eat Mysteries;” Jennifer Chow, whose latest multicultural mystery is “Mimi Lee Reads between the Lines;” and Abby Collette, whose newest addition to her Ice Cream Parlor Mystery series is “A Game of Cones.”

 

July 8, Bite the Buzz, 6:30 pm. Standard Pest Management President Gil Bloom is an entomologist, industry trainer, and consultant with more than 40 years of pest-management experience. He presents a lively multi-media presentation to help participants develop mosquito-reduced home zones. Alley Pond Environmental Center, 224-65 76th Ave., Oakland Gardens.
