Movie Version Of

by Rose A. Whitney

Although not as visually spectacular as the screen version of “Chicago”, the movie version of “Rent” is definitely a notable contribution to the recently revived genre of movie musicals.

The movie’s theme is very loosely based on the opera “La Boheme”. (In fact, one of the main characters in named “Mimi”). It focuses on a group of diverse friends, members of New York City’s East Village subculture, who struggle for survival despite many personal obstacles and challenges. Hot topics such as substance abuse, urban dislocation and renewal, social alienation, AIDS, and same-sex relationships are explored in a mature, realistic manner.

All the performers are outstanding, in particular, Jessie L. Martin (“Law and Order”) fans will be amazed at his transformation), Idina Menzell, Adam Pascal and Rosario Dawson, who shine in their roles.

Although the music is rock, the lyrics express a wide range of emotions not generally found in standard rock fare.

‘Walk The Line’ Is

A Treat For Viewers

Johnny Cash fans are in for a treat! “Walk the Line” is a realistic and entertaining portrayal of the beloved country legend.

After a slow, unfocused beginning in which Cash’s dysfunctional childhood is explored, the movie blossoms into a wonderful character study and musical tribute. It is a well balanced study in that the movie portrays some negative issues, such as substance abuse, as well as the artistic achievements of the music legend. Many of his popular songs are featured, giving the movie a concert feel.

Joaquin Phoenix (Cash) and Reese Witherspoon (June Carter) intuitively capture the personality and spirit of their characters. Both performers are outstanding, especially Phoenix who is deserving of an Oscar nomination for Best Actor. It should be noted that the soundtrack does not feature Cash or Carter original recordings.
