Beginning October 1, residents living within Community Boards 1 through 6 in western Queens will be able to place their electronic waste (e-waste) curbside for collection by the Department of Sanitation (DSNY).
New York Coty residents have been banned from placing e -waste curbside with their other trash and recyclables because e-waste can be toxic to handlers. Studies have also shown that e-waste is hazardous to the environment and can become toxic when incinerated.
Under current regulations New Yorkers can face a $100 fine for failing to properly dispose of e-waste.
The new program will include electronics such as televisions, computers, keyboards, DVD players, video game consoles, computer “mice” and items that are not compatible with “regular” trash, a DSNY spokesperson said.
“Homeowners, landlords and superintendents are urged to visit www.nyc.gov/donate to view a list of items that are not considered e-waste,” the spokesperson said. “For example, most people are not aware that toasters and vacuum cleaners are not considered e-waste, so check the list before you place items curbside.”
New Yorkers can call 311 to request an e-mail pickup or arrange a pickup by visiting www.nyc.gov/assets/dsny/site/contact.e-waste-pickup-request.
E-waste should be placed curbside after 4 p.m. on the day before a scheduled pickup.
E-waste pickups are available on weekdays, except for city holidays and may be scheduled up to two weeks in advance, according to the DSNY.
