Borough’s 1st Baby Of 2010 Born At NY Hospital Queens

Thirty-four minutes after the ball dropped in Times Square to mark the start of 2010, baby girl Shirley Chen entered the world at New York Hospital Queens. She was the first baby to be born at the hospital in the new decade.

Shirley weighed eight pounds, 10 ounces and is the second child of mother Guiming Ren and father Xiu Chen. The couple’s first child, also a daughter was born in China 14 years ago. The family resides in Flushing.

Registered Nurse Kristen Caruso, who took care of little Shirley on New Year’s Day was especially delighted to have Shirley as her patient as she, too, was a New Year’s baby. “I am thrilled to be Shirley’s nurse today as we celebrate our birthdays together,” Caruso declared. Shirley is “adorable”, she added.

Baby Shirley, who at first had been called “Anna” by her parents, received a $1,000 savings bond from the hospital, flowers and a teddy bear among her first gifts. Babies ’R’ Us also presented an assortment of baby gifts and a gift card to the family.

New York Hospital Queens is a member of the New York-Presbyterian Healthcare System and an affiliate of the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
