Astoria Bookshop’s Shelves Are Loaded With Great New Books

“Dear Friends of the Astoria Bookshop,

A year ago this week, we were just starting to determine how to safely re-open to in-store browsing. Thank you all for sticking with us through the subsequent waves, and for following our masking and social distancing rules to keep our booksellers safe in the shop. We’ve had ZERO cases at work all year! Read on for a recap of Indie Bookstore Day, some of our recently published faves, and a preview of June and July titles that we think you’re going to love. Our Saturday booksellers and shop dog had a record-setting Independent Bookstore Day on April 30th! After 2 years of window shopping and sidewalk browsing, we were delighted to throw open our doors (literally, for ventilation) and welcome everybody inside.” Highlights included:

  • A group of cyclists taking a bicycle tour of Queens bookstores
  • Rafael Herrin-Ferri’s walking tour of local architecture with a group of 20
  • Masked browsers checking out every section of the store all at the same time
  • A silent auction that raised $108 for the Astoria Food Pantry

“Thank you to everyone who helped make the day a huge success! We are so grateful for the continued support of our community, which allows us to do things like pledge 10% of our Mother’s Day weekend sales to the NY Abortion Access Fund, for a total donation of $614, and host a food drive for the Astoria Food Pantry, where we collected SO MANY bags of non-perishables, toiletries and hygiene items, and cash donations that help support their essential work.”
