A Successful 2018-2019 Year At Newcomers High School

Newcomers High School is a school for newly arrived students, located in the heart of Long Island City. Since its founding in 1995, the school has been providing challenging academic programs to students with different levels of English proficiency.

Highlights from this school year include Career Day, during which the Honorable Judge Velasquez from the New York State Supreme Court visited Newcomers High School and delivered an inspirational speech to students. During Principal for the Day, in partnership with the NYC Department of Education and PENCIL, Rod Rudzin and his team from Saatva, the first largest online luxury mattress company in the country, visited the school, shadowing Principal Katcher. Throughout the school year, Newcomers High School also saw visitors from JetBlue, NYPD, The Hilton Gardens

Inn in Long Island City, and Bank of Hope.

Many students were recognized with awards and scholarships throughout this school year.

Lucas Coronel, Krystyna Savytska, Christopher Aristil and Anqi Li were awarded the 10th Annual Morgan Book Project.

Sophomore Xiaoyu Lin became the PSAL Champion for the 100-meter breaststroke as part of the Newcomers High School Swim Team. He also earned fifth place in the New York State Boys Swimming and Diving Championship and was awarded Sophomore of the Year.

Senior Minghuang Wang received Honorable Mention for the Ruth and Burt Schlesinger Award of Poetry, sponsored by the Christopher Lightfoot Walker Literature Project Writing Awards for High School Seniors. He was also awarded the United Federation of Teachers’ (UFT) Albert Shanker Scholarship. Two other recipients for the UFT’s award were Maria Jose Larrea and Mahniz Reza.

Senior Mahniz Reza received a full scholarship to attend Barnard College; Maria Jose Larrea will attend Macaulay Honors College at the City University of New York; Minghuang Wang will attend Skidmore College; and Raihan Mamum will attend Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology, where he is the recipient of the LaGuardia Airport Redevelopment Opportunity Scholarship, which includes a full-tuition scholarship and guaranteed paid internship at the Port Authority of New York.

Lhakpa Dolma, Larrea, Reza, and Laura Caceres were recognized at LaGuardia Community College’s College Now Honoree Ceremony, honoring students who have taken more than two College Now classes and received an “A” or higher. These students are four of the 35 total students recognized across New York City public schools.
