MS-13 Member Arrested In Fatal Subway Shooting

Police have arrested a 26-year-old gang member who they say shot and killed another man at a Queens subway station on Sunday afternoon. NYPD Chief of Detectives Dermot Shea said the suspected gunman is known to police as an MS-13 gang member who “has been arrested before in New York City and has been part of a criminal group gang case before in New York City.”

The 20-year-old victim, Abel Mosso, was shot multiple times in the face at about 12:45 pm on February 3rd at the 90th Street-Elmhurst Avenue station on the 7 line on the border of Elmhurst and Jackson Heights. Police said Mosso and several other men, including the gunman, were brawling inside a Manhattan bound 7 train as it pulled into the 90th Street station. The brawl spilled out onto the platform, where a straphanger recorded the violence on his cell phone, police said. The video shows Mosso and a second man wrestling on the subway platform as another man suddenly jumps on top of them. A group of straphangers then surrounds the three men shouting, “Leave him alone! And “Get off him!” That’s when a heavy-set Hispanic male with facial hair, wearing a puffy gray jacket and a multicolored scarf stood up with a gun in his hand. Mosso stumbled to his feet, a shot rang out and he fell back onto the platform, the source said. The gunman then fired five more rounds at Mosso, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police believe the gunman may have wrestled the .22-caliber pistol used in the shooting from Mosso while the two men were wrestling on the platform. Chief Shea said, “There (on the platform) is what you see in the widely circulated viral video. A gun appears and we have an individual shot. We believe approximately five or six shots are fired during this incident striking the victim multiple times in the face.”

Police are searching for a man wanted for questioning in connection with the shooting. The man, who ran from the scene following the shooting, is described as a male Hispanic with a slim-to-medium build, who was wearing a hooded sweatshirt and dark-colored jeans at the time of the attack. They are urging anyone with information to call the CrimeStoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS or click on: www.nypdcrimestoppers.com.
