Democratic Orgs Host Astoria Public Advocate Forum

The Taminent Regular Democratic Club, Powhatan & Pocahontas Democratic Club, and the Queens County Young Democrats (QYCD) co-hosted a candidates’ forum on the evening of Wednesday, January 30th, featuring 10 of the contenders in the February 26 special election for New York City public advocate. The forum took place at the Omonoia Cretan’s Association in Astoria.

“Astoria residents and all New Yorkers will rely on our next public advocate to be a champion for the people and hold those in power accountable to us,” said Powhatan President Dirk McCall, Taminent co-President Loren Amor, and QCYD President Breeana Mulligan in a joint statement. “That’s why we were proud to host a forum where members of our community could hear directly from the candidates about their positions on the Amazon deal, affordable housing, criminal justice reform, and other critical issues facing our city.”

More than 100 Astoria voters heard from the following candidates Wednesday:

Several local elected officials and community leaders were at the forum to greet attendees, including NYS Senator Michael Gianaris, NYS Assembly Member Aravella Simotas, City Council Member Costa Constantinides, District Leader Anne Marie Anzalone, District Leader Carol Scarano, and Taminent co-President Heather Cortez.
