Assembly Member Aravella Simotas honored 43 local elementary school students with official NYS Assembly certificates congratulating them for successfully completing her 2018 Summer Reading Challenge. Each summer, Simotas presents this challenge for local students to read for at least 15 minutes a day, for at least 40 days during the months of July and August, using age-appropriate reading lists that she sends out to public schools in Astoria.

Simotas’ reading challenge encourages students to delve into books and embrace reading outside of class. “Strong reading skills are the foundation of a good education, and I hope to inspire students to appreciate good books,” Simotas said. “I developed my love of reading in school with lots of encouragement from my parents, and I think the Summer Reading Challenge encourages the same excitement for these students.”

Five of the students came to Simotas’ office on November 16 to receive their certificates in person from the Assembly member. Over cookies, donuts and juice, the children talked with Simotas about their favorite books and classes at school, as well as their ambitions. “These bright young people are proof of the power of reading,” said Simotas. “Encouraging children to read is a great way to ensure that the next generation is prepared for the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.”
