Village Grill

There’s always something delicious cooking and baking at Village Grill in Forest Hills. Located on the cozy corner of Yellowstone Blvd. and Ingram Street, Village Grill offers casual Greek and American dishes at great prices, to stay or to go. There are so many ‘regulars’ here that come for all their favorites, and the friendly owner, Dina, knows them all and offers her home style cooking to them.

That day, Dina whipped up a savory zucchini and leek pie, scented perfectly with dill and mint layered into a tender crust, baked until golden. Guests at Village Grill have the option of ordering two ways: from the tidy menu with everyone’s favorites, or from the steam table, where the special entrees and side dishes change daily. The evening I visited, Dina had prepared boneless chicken with orzo, in a delicate tomato sauce. This was delicious and satisfying, along with the sides of roasted zucchini, eggplant, and red peppers. Village Grill’s Greek style lemon potatoes are so good, even kids order them. Other steam table specials include spaghetti with rich, meaty Bolognese sauce, roasted chicken legs, stuffed peppers, and chicken with vegetables, and all steam table meals are priced under $10 for generous portions, making Village Grill a delicious and economic choice for couples and families.

Why not start with a nice Greek salad tossed with greens, cucumbers, green peppers, and olives, topped with slabs of creamy feta cheese, perfect for sharing. Dina’s homemade, flaky spinach pie and cheese pie make great starters or a lunch, with a side salad. Village Grill’s soups are so good, people ordered them in the heat of summer. Greek avgolemono chicken soup, lentil soup, or soup of the day can start your meal or accompany one of their great sandwiches. Kids love the mozzarella sticks, juicy chicken wing dings, and the fried meatballs, all great for sharing with six to an order ($7.00).

Village Grill’s chicken souvlaki is one of the most popular dishes for lunch or dinner, made with marinated chicken breast laced on skewers and served with a small Greek salad, pita and Village Grill sauce or tzatziki. A side dish of pita bread and one side dish such as rice, potatoes, or freshly grilled vegetables comes with it too, making this a great deal at just $14. Greek Loukaniko sausage is mildly seasoned and served on a platter or in a sandwich. Imagine a gyro sandwich, filled with juicy sliced beef or pork gyro, salad, red onion, and tzatziki sauce, just oozing with flavor. If you prefer a meatless meal, Village Grill’s falafel are made from scratch and served in a sandwich on pita bread, or on a platter with six falafel balls, a small Greek salad, one side dish, and tzatziki sauce ($13.50)

Wraps are very popular here and cost around $8. One of the most popular is the Santorini fish wrap with fried codfish, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers and Village Grill sauce. You’ll need two hands for the chicken wrap filled with grilled chicken, roasted peppers, fresh mozzarella and balsamic glaze. The Mediterranean wrap features beef gyro, lettuce, tomatoes, green pepper, feta cheese, olive oil and vinegar dressing. The veggie wrap has grilled mushrooms, zucchini, and roasted red peppers wrapped up into a soft tortilla. Add some crispy, golden French fries for just $3 more. Village Grill burgers are another great option for lunch or dinner, with the lamb burger being one of my favorites with its fine ground lamb, a host of fragrant, mild herbs, and topped with feta cheese, tomato, red onion and tzatziki, served on a bun ($14.99). Classic hamburgers, turkey burgers and veggie burgers can’t be beat at an unbelievable $6.

Dina’s desserts are very special as they are made with love. Her rice pudding is heavenly, and you must try the Greek wedding cookies too, dusted with powdered sugar. That day, she was inspired to make a traditional semolina cake called “Ravani,” soaked in “Mastika,” a liqueur from a small island in Greece. That, and a cup of coffee, is all you need to feel good in these crazy times.

The Village Grill is open from 11am to 10pm Monday - Saturday and Sunday 12pm to 10pm six days a week, closed Tuesday. Let Village Grill cater your next business lunch or family event.
