NYS Senator Michael Gianaris and Assembly Member Aravella Simotas endorse Catalina Cruz for State Assembly at a press conference in Jackson Heights. Catalina Cruz, Democrat for State Assembly (39th District), earned the endorsement of New York State Senator Michael Gianaris and New York State Assembly Member Aravella Simotas at a press conference in Jackson Heights, ahead of the general election in November. Cruz, who is running a grassroots campaign, recently won her Democratic primary over the incumbent candidate by a margin of 10 points. She is poised to become the first DREAMer to hold elected office in New York State.

“It’s an honor to be endorsed by Senator Michael Gianaris and Assembly Member Aravella Simotas, two of our borough’s biggest champions,” said Cruz. “It’s important for our community-driven campaign to continue to strengthen our coalition as we gear up for the general election. Together, I know we will fight for social and economic justice, and to ensure New York’s most vulnerable communities are protected and have ladders of opportunity to succeed. I’m proud to have them as allies and I look forward to working with them in Albany to deliver the progressive change our communities need and deserve.”

“Catalina Cruz is a dynamic, experienced leader who will make her mark on Albany and I am proud to endorse her,” said Senator Gianaris. “I look forward to working with her to fix the MTA, deliver more affordable housing, and finally pass the DREAM Act.”

“I am thrilled to endorse Catalina Cruz to become the next woman to represent the 39th Assembly District,” said Assembly Member Simotas. “I have worked with Catalina for a long time, and know her to be a fierce advocate for women’s rights, students, immigrants and tenants. She is a very accomplished attorney, a long-time fighter for Queens, and I am proud that she will be joining me in Albany. I am certain that Catalina’s strong voice and intimate experiences as a DREAMer will resonate with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle so that we can finally see the DREAM Act realized in New York State.”

Throughout her campaign for the Democratic nomination, Cruz built a diverse and broad coalition of support to bring new leadership to Albany. Among Cruz’s supporters: NYC Comptroller Scott Stringer, Congress Member Luis Gutierrez, Council Members Daniel Dromm, Margaret Chin, Jimmy Van Bramer, Carlos Menchaca, Helen Rosenthal, Mark Levine, Donovan Richards, Carlina Rivera, former Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito, and former NYC Council Member Julissa Ferreras-Copeland. In addition, Cruz earned the support of the Unite Here Local 100, Stonewall Democratic Club, Muslim Democratic Club, Kids PAC NYC, New Visions Democratic Club, Jim Owles Liberal Democratic Club, Amplify Her, and the Lesbian and Gay Democratic Club of Queens. Gianaris was elected to the State Senate in 2010 after having served for 10 years in the State Assembly. The first Greek American to be elected to office from New York City, Gianaris serves as the chair of the Democratic Conference and represents the Queens neighborhoods of Long Island City, Sunnyside, Woodside, Woodhaven, Ridgewood, and Astoria.

In office since 2011, Simotas represents the 36th Assembly District. She has worked extensively both as a legislator and staunch community advocate, committed to supporting women and families, students, seniors, small businesses and the environment. Simotas chairs the Assembly’s Ethics and Guidance Committee and is co-chair of the NYS Legislative Ethics Commission. She also serves as a member of the Assembly’s Committees for Banks, Energy, Judiciary and Ways and Means.
