Home Depot To Open At Coca-Cola Plant

The Coca-Cola bottling plant at 59-02 Borden Avenue in Maspeth is facing a wrecking ball to make way for a new Home Depot store.

The home improvement giant acquired the seven-acre parcel from owner, Kaymac Property Corporation, for $63 million on September 4th, a spokesperson for Coca-Cola Refreshments said.

“Coca-Cola has a proud history in Maspeth and a longstanding commitment to New York City,” Frances McGorry, Coca-Cola’s president of metro operations said in a prepared statement. “We look forward to continuing to operate in New York and are evaluating our options to ensure we continue to provide world-class service to our customers and the people who enjoy our beverages.”

Coca-Cola has bottled its soft drink products at the Maspeth plant for more than 38 years, a company representative said. The plant, built in the 1960s, became a neighborhood landmark, employing generations of local workers, and currently employs 118 workers.

Plans have not been announced for the new Home Depot store, but it is likely that the design will comply with existing orange-trimmed models, a company representative said.

Coca-Cola’s lease on the property expires on March 30, 2020, according to The Real Deal.

Demolition of the plant is not expected to take place until Coca Cola’s lease on the property expires.
