Firefighters Battle Transformer Fires

Firefighters responded to fires at two underground transformers in Forest Hills on August 31.

Local residents called 911 at about 6 a.m. on August 31st to report loud explosions that shook local streets and sidewalks at 63rd Road and 99th Street, police said.

Con Edison workers arrived to shut off underground gas lines as police cordoned off local streets in the area.

Firefighters battled flames that shot from manhole covers at the two locations for more than an hour before the fires were brought under control.

There were no injuries.
