Red Bull associate producer Nathaniel Winkelstein and Secret Theatre artistic director Richard Mazda join forces for an unique four-person cast in a version that should come in at 90 minutes. Director Nathaniel Winkelstein is promising a Hamlet that will shift and move at a fast pace.

In “Hamlet – What Dreams May Come” Prince Hamlet seeks to avenge his father’s murder, but must sacrifice his love, his life and perhaps his very mind to accomplish it.
Four performers embody all of the characters in this innovative new Hamlet; a fast-paced, non-stop whirlwind of mind and body as rational thought battles with hysteria. The Secret Theatre teams up with Ript Theater Company on this exciting production. Ript’s Hamlet has eliminated over half the text of the original play, as well as several notable characters.

Fortinbras has been removed both in person and reference. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are, indeed, dead. These cuts focus the lens on the family drama at the center of the story. A byproduct of this harsh cut is a script that toggles dizzyingly between stillness and action, comedy and tragedy, estrangement and pathos. This enables the audience to experience some of the dislocation that Hamlet is experiencing in his own world.

The Secret Theatre has dedicated itself to producing classic works to a high standard resulting in plaudits for recent productions of “King Lear” starring Austin Pendleton, “Merchant of Venice” with Richard Mazda (Shylock), other classics like “Richard III” and many others. Regarded as one of the best off-off-Broadway theatres in New York, the award-winning Secret Theatre continues its mission to bring classical plays to life to entertain theatre lovers everywhere.

The Ript Theater Company is devoted to bringing classic tales to vibrant life through innovative productions, new adaptations and performer-centric work: “We believe in the power of the words of the great classicists, be they Shakespeare, Moliere, Aphra Behn or Euripedes, to move us and deepen our understanding of our world and our times.”

Ript Theater Company derives its name from the first folio spelling of “ripped” – a word defined as “cut open: or “removed by cutting out.” “These two definitions define us as company. We pursue vulnerable, fast-paced, high-stakes performances through intensive yet judicious cuts of scripts to fit the modern day, as well as a laser-focus on the relationships, stakes and emotional lives of our characters.”
