Man Rescued From Window Ledge

An emotionally disturbed man kept police at bay for over an hour on August 7, first barricading himself inside his fifth-floor apartment and then climbing onto a window ledge before NYPD Emergency Service cops and a crisis negotiator were able to talk him down.

Police responded the building at 36-08 29th St. in the Dutch Kills section of Long Island City at about 9:15 p.m. on August 7 to find the man locked inside his apartment, refusing to let them inside.

Officers from the NYPD Emergency Service Unit (ESU) placed an inflatable rescue cushion on the sidewalk below the apartment, police said.  When a police crisis negotiator tried to talk to the man, he climbed on a ledge outside the apartment.

“He sat on the ledge, dangled from the edge and stood watching the crowd on the sidewal,” a police source said.

The man finally agreed to leave the apartment at about 10:40 p.m., police said. He was taken, uninjured, to Elmhurst Hospital Center where he was placed under observation.
