Photos Lily Brown The hottest new restaurant/pub is Adriaen Block in Astoria, offering drinks—alcoholic and not—made with CBD tinctures and a “munchies” menu that highlights grilled meats and seafood, some of which will also be available with CBD-infused sauce and whipped cream for dessert.

Created by Zsolt “George” Csonka, a veteran of The One Group in the city and Las Vegas, Adriaen Block is named for the Dutch explorer who first navigated the nearby Hell Gate connecting the East River and Long Island Sound in 1614. Though George started out working in nightclubs and bars, he recently became more interested in health and wellness trends, and was fascinated by the reputed health benefits of CDB extracts, such as its reputed ability to alleviate anxiety, pain and inflammation. CBD (cannabidiol) is a legal THCfree product made from hemp, so it has no psychoactive properties and does not cause a “high.”

Non-alcoholic CBD options showcase Seedlip, the world’s first distilled non-alcoholic spirit, in drinks like the Garden & Tonic with Seedlip Garden, Indian Tonic and fresh peas, and Blackberry-Basil Sour with Seedlip Garden, blackberry shrub, basil and egg white.

Non-CBD cocktails include Call Me in the Morning with soju, house smoked bacon-pineapple bitters, house habanero-basil bitters, muddled cucumber, cilantro, agave, turmeric and fresh lime; Blackwell with blackberry shrub, ruby port, house beet bitters, Peychaud’s bitters, agave and lime; and the eponymous Adriaen Block with Cocchi Americano, Madeira, allspice bitters and bay leaf.

For the munchies, the food menu offers classics like thick cut Nueske’s Bacon; hand-cut Steak Tartare; cheese and charcuterie boards, as well as Faroe Island wild salmon, a burger and three cuts of steak: hanger, filet and NY strip, with an optional CBD sauce. Vegetarian options include Vinetta, a Transylvanian eggplant spread with pita bread, and Beyond Burger with caramelized onions, plum tomato jam and feta on naan with fries. For dessert, CBD-infused whipped cream is the perfect topper for a molten chocolate cake or key lime pie.

The room is a cozy corner space with an eight-seat bar and 32 seats for dining including a black leather couch for lounging. George has brightened it up by replacing two walls with large windows, allowing passersby to see through the room and guests to connect with the neighborhood. Behind the bar, an exposed brick wall plays canvas to various digital displays that will also allow guests to connect with friends and family around the world via Skype for special/private events.
