World Breastfeeding Week Begins

On August 1, the start of World Breastfeeding Week, Astoria residents held a Latch-On event to support nursing mothers and drive support for Assembly Member Aravella Simotas’ bill, the Family Accommodation in Entertainment Act. The event was co-sponsored by Simotas with Christine Serdejian Yearwood, the founder of Up-Stand, an Astoria-based pregnancy rights organization. Simotas said, “As a mom who experienced this joy with my own daughter I know how critical this nurturing practice is to families. But there is much more we need to do as a society to support breastfeeding and even to make this choice possible.” Guest speakers at the event were Congress Member Carolyn Maloney, Council Member Costa Constantinides, Assembly Member Nily Rozic and Council Member Donovan Richards.
