NYC Parks Kicks Off Outdoor Pool Season At E. Elmhurst Cool Pool

NYC Parks’ 53 outdoor pools opened for the season on June 27, and will remain open through Sunday, September 9. Daily hours of operation are 11:00 am to 3:00 pm and 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm, seven days a week. This summer, Parks has debuted colorful makeovers at five of their intermediate-sized pools, part of a new pilot program called “Cool Pools NYC,” with Fisher Pool in East Elmhurst.

On June 26 NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, joined NYC Council Members Barry Grodenchik and Francisco Moya, NYS Senator Jose Peralta, Community Board 3 District Manager Giovanna Reid, and local kids to celebrate the start of the outdoor pool season and debut the new Cool Pool at East Elmhurst’s Fisher Pool. After remarks, Commissioner Silver jumped in with the kids to celebrate the first splash of the summer.

The renovations to these five pools include: a colorful paint job with fun polar-themed decals; new furniture on site including lounge chairs and cabana-style shade structures; new plantings to make the pools greener; and new programming all summer long. Prior to Cool Pools NYC, none of these sites had a major renovation since they were built in the 1970s. Cool Pools NYC will improve the quality of life for people in the communities where these pools are located, and bring people together to interact with their pools—and each other—in a cool new way!

This summer NYC Parks will continue its sun safety efforts at all of its outdoor pools, with the installation of 76 BrightGuard sunscreen dispensers providing free SPF 30 sun protection. This important health and safety measure is being provided to the city for the second consecutive year at no cost. This initiative was made possible through NYC Parks’ partnership with BrightGuard, who generously brought together non-profit sponsor and donor IMPACT Melanoma with leading sunscreen provider, Coppertone, whose shared mission is to ensure people can enjoy their time outdoors while protecting their skin.

NYC Parks offers FREE Learn to Swim lessons at outdoor pools throughout the city. Registration is run by an online lottery, which opened on June 11. In addition to swimming lessons, Parks hosts water aerobics, senior splash, lap swimming programs, adaptive aquatics, and more—all for free. For a full list of offerings and locations, check out the Citywide Aquatics page at www.nycgovparks.org/programs/aquatics.

• Swim Team 8:00 am – 8:45 am Tuesdays and Thursdays

• Evening Fitness Classes on Monday/Wednesday/Friday
