The Astoria Heights Park Reopening Celebration

The Friends of Astoria Heights Park will host a park reopening celebration June 30, from 11 am to 2 pm. The park is located at 45th Street and 30th Road in Astoria. The event will feature a variety of fun activities for children of all ages, including the City Parks Foundation Mobile Puppet performance of the “Big Bad Wolf,” live music, a Calm City mobile meditation bus, and a Parks Department Playmobile. Additionally, the Friend’s group is working with local organizations to bring meaningful workshops that day and on Saturdays through July. Organizations include The Connected Chef, Uniproject Build, Big Reuse, Bike NYC, Wild Heart Performing Arts Studio, Shastye Art Space and Gallery, Family Yoga and Meditation with Lisa Barelli and Connection Church NYC.

It was only five years ago in September 2013 when a group of parents flooded into Community Board 1 to complain about the poor conditions of the park, bringing with them containers of broken glass and making a strong impression upon the board to prioritize the park for improved conditions. The Friends of Astoria Heights Park group was formed and since then the group has been hosting clean ups, park beautification events and programming that not only enhance the space, but increase volunteerism.

Without the support of local electeds and Community Board 1, Astoria Heights Playground would have taken longer to get the much-needed attention.

Council Member Costa Costantinides said, “Parks like Astoria Heights are the lifeblood of our community. I was happy to work in partnership with Borough President Melinda Katz and the Community Parks initiative to secure funding to rebuild the playground at Astoria Heights Park into one that truly serves our residents. I look forward to continuing supporting a great organization like Friends of Astoria Heights Park in keeping this a safe, meaningful space for the future!”
