Cops Continue Crackdown On Illegal Fireworks

By Liz Goff
Police in Queens are planning to keep a lid on illegal activity over the July 4th holiday, combing streets for illegal fireworks and cracking down on people who sell, store and/or use the illegal explosives.

Police officials are warning residents that they are facing more than a summons if they are caught with illegal fireworks. Violators will be arrested and processed through the system, which could put them behind bars for several days over the busy holiday, police officials said.

NYPD officials said cops would continue the fireworks crackdown, along with enforcement of traffic and drunk driving violations that occurs throughout the city over the Independence Day celebration.

Officials said police would be establishing traffic checkpoints to catch drunk drivers, motorists who fail to use seat belts and those who talk and/or text on electronic devices while driving.

“People must realize the dangers involved in setting-off illegal fireworks,” police officials said. “How many times does someone have to lose a finger – or a hand, to send the message that fireworks are deadly in the hands of amateurs?” the officials said.

Fire officials echoed the message and warned residents that FDNY marshals and investigators are also involved in the crackdown.

“Anyone who is thinking about dealing or using illegal fireworks in the days prior to, or after the July 4th holiday should be on the lookout for law enforcement,” a fire spokesperson said.

“We will be out there looking for you.”

Anyone wishing to report the sale, storage and/or use of illegal fireworks over the July 4th holiday can do so by calling 911, police said.
