At Holliswood Center in Jamaica, resident Marcelle Legrand celebrated her 101st birthday on June 6 among family, fellow residents and staff.  Ms. Legrand is a native of Haiti who speaks Creole and some English. Born on June 6, 1917, Marcelle moved from Haiti to Chicago and back to Haiti, before moving again, this time to the Hollis section of Queens no more than 15 years ago. Having three children (two of whom are still alive), a brother, Gene Robert, plus nieces and nephews, Marcelle was a teacher during her working years who taught general studies. A devout Catholic, Marcelle loves both music and TV, and she enjoys relaxing. Today at 101 though, her son George Legrand joined the Holliswood Center staff singing “Happy Birthday” in English and then in Creole. A cake made out of flowers to resemble a birthday cake was Marcelle Legrand with staff, fellow residents and friends.Marcelle Legrand with staff, fellow residents and friends.created for Marcelle since she cannot eat cake, and there was also music and dancing.
