There were seminars and exhibit booths providing a wealth of information to future homebuyers. As part of National Homeownership Month, Neighborhood Housing Services of Queens CDC (NHSQ) continues to help build the dreams of many community residents with its Annual Housing Expo in the Queens Museum, which more than 400 community residents attended on Saturday, June 2.

NHS of Queens Executive Director Yoselin Genao-Estrella explained that the activity is a wonderful opportunity for potential first-time home buyers in Queens to get direct information straight from representatives of private financial entities and government organizations. The representatives answered questions and cleared any doubts that interested participants had. “Every year we hold this event for all those who are looking for a house. We offer them financial help available to come up with down payments and closing costs for those who qualify; however, they must meet certain requirements, and in our institution we guide them.”

Congress Member Joe Crowley praised the NHS’ mission of guiding immigrants on their way to buying real estate or finding permanent housing. “Far too many families in Queens and the Bronx are still recovering from the housing crisis that sent our economy into freefall. This event helps bring stability to our community by giving families the resources they need to be able to become buyers and homeowners.”

Similarly, NYS Senator Jose Peralta added that NHS is a great partner in the fight for affordable housing, and this will surely change the lives of many people. “As we are in the midst of a housing crisis in the city, workshops like this one put into place by NHS are critical to stabilizing our hard-working communities. The annual Housing Expo provides important tools, not only to tenants, but also to first-time homebuyers and homeowners.”

Queens residents Hugo and Rosario Rubí attended the NHS of Queens Housing Expo to learn through seminars and workshops how to rent affordable housing or buy their own property. “We already have the sights on our future home and we even have a picture on the wall,” said an excited Rosario. After listening to the workshop on how to fill out a form to apply for a mortgage loan, the requirements and documents that should be presented to the banking institution and the importance of knowing how to manage their finances, the Rubís felt assured they were closer to realizing their dream. Thanks to the workshops they learned and understood better the home buying process and the programs the government has available for first-time home buyers. During event, Assembly Member Ari Espinal shared and talked with attendees. Espinal highlighted the importance of the event which offers the community the necessary tools to get the key to their own home. “I am so proud to be a sponsor of the Neighborhood Housing Services of Queens CDC’s Housing Expo 2018. It is a great resource for all members of our community to learn more about the home-buying process and housing assistance services. Everyone should have access to the path to homeownership, and this event provides our community with critical information to take the first step.”

The Housing Fair is supported by the New York State Mortgage Agency (SONYMA), NYS Housing Trust Fund, the Environmental Protection Department, and the New York City Department of Finance, in addition to financial institutions Sterling Bank, Wells Fargo, Citibank, Santander Bank, ICG, HSBC and M & T Bank, among others.

Throughout the year, the Queens NHS offers seminars, financial workshops and affordable housing classes. For more information call 718 457-1017 or visit the website www.nhsofqueens.org.
