Authors Galore At Astoria Bookshop

June in New York City has authors galore! As always Astoria Bookshop has got a full slate of in-store events right here in Queens. Below is a list of upcoming events for June, and remember that you can always see the full calendar on their website, Astoriabookshop.com.

On Friday, June 1st, journalist and millennial expert, Alison Lea Sher discussed her new book, “The Millennial’s Guide to Changing The World: A New Generation’s Handbook to Being Yourself & Living with Purpose, a guide and blueprint to a purposeful millennial existence-and how we can make a difference.

Epic Reads Summer Meet-Up - Astoria, (RSVP via Facebook)

Get ready to book shimmy! Epic Reads invites readers of all ages to join a round-table where you’ll get to strike up conversation with some of Astoria Bookshops’ Fave authors who will chat about their books and other fan favorites. So who’s coming to this stop?

Join Astoria Bookshop after storytime on Thursday, June 21st for “The Ultimate New Mom’s Cookbook!” Food can be a big worry for new moms—from what to eat while pregnant and what first foods to feed a baby to what to do when faced with a picky toddler. “The Ultimate New Mom’s Cookbook” is an essential manual for the first days of pregnancy through the toddler years, and takes the stress of out planning and cooking wholesome meals for a baby, as well as the entire family.

Join Astoria Bookshop on Saturday, June 30th with author Cynthia Kane, who will be discussing her Book, “Talk To Yourself Like A Buddhist,” followed by a guided meditation. Change your words, change your world: There are hundreds of books, workshops, and classes that teach us how to communicate effectively with others, but very few of us pay attention to how we speak to ourselves. Best-selling author and communication expert Cynthia Kane believes this is a problem, and she is sounding the alarm! Kane writes that there is an unreported epidemic of negative self-talk in our culture today.

Come to the Bookshop ready to tell a five-minute true story about something that happened to you. Don’t worry about sticking to a theme...you don’t have to. Participants’ names will be pulled from a basket, open-mic style. And of course, non-storytellers are welcome to join the audience! For over four years Astoria Bookshop has had performances from authors with big book deals, standup comics with national TV credits, The Moth GrandSLAM performers and complete and total strangers who had a story to tell. Creative Writing Workshop (RSVP via Facebook)

Sunday, June 17, 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Stepping into Scenework—whether you are writing a script, novel, or short story, writing’s basic building block is the “scene.” One piles on top of the next, each changing something that came before by creating and/or confronting conflict. Through a mixture of discussion and writing exercises, explore writing scenes designed to relentlessly move your story forward. $10 suggested contribution. BYO Pen & Paper!

Astoria Bookshops’ focus is on an intersectional exploration of women’s rights and status worldwide. The next selection is “Americanah” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Young Adult Book Club (RSVP via Facebook)

Welcome to the Astoria Bookshop YA Book Club! They’ll be reading books published for readers ages 12 and up. The book club is open to everyone.
