Katch Astoria

There’s always something good cooking at Katch Astoria. With 50 beers on tap to accompany your meal, fabulous cocktails, and 2,500 square feet of outdoor space, Katch Astoria is ready for summer! Make Katch your place to view the World Cup matches on the patio, on a huge screen, with a frosty beer. Lots of muted screens show all your favorite sports games, while allowing for conversation and listening to the cool play list.

Katch Astoria is a top choice for singles, couples, friends, and corporate event planners. Jet Blue, FDNY, Comedy Central, and others have all held corporate events here, so call for details. What’s more, Katch Astoria is celebrating its 5th year serving the Astoria community, and has new owners at the helm. Bill McSorley and his wife Roseanne, have years of experience in the restaurant business, including the legendary Pelham Bay Diner in the Bronx. They’re keeping the house favorites and introducing new, delicious menu items, thanks to Chef Giovanni. Katch Astoria is famous for its 50 beers on tap from all over the world, including Astoria’s own Single Cut brewery and Iconic brewery. Beers are categorized into “Hipster Status,” Kurrent Attractions,” “Beer Geeks,” and “Aromatic Snobs.” Kocktails include my favorite white Kosmo, cool and refreshing with fig vodka, fresh lime juice and white cranberry juice. The Klint Manhattan goes down easily, as does the Kranberry Kiss, and a selection of “Mules” served in copper cups. Check their website for beer tastings and other fun events.

Whether you eat at the long, inviting bar, a cozy banquette, a tidy table, or outdoors on the patio, Katch’s appetizers are a must for sharing and enjoying. Homemade guacamole is creamy, seasoned to order, and served with warm tortilla chips. Fried calamari are crisp and golden, served with zesty marinara sauce, while the southern fried chicken fingers are made from fresh chicken brined in buttermilk, served with honey mustard dipping sauce ($10). A new item on the menu is “Angry and Wicked Mac ‘n Cheese,” given its name for the signature spicy sauce. We also loved their truffle mac ‘n cheese for its earthy flavor that was not overwhelmed with cheese, so you could taste the twisted fusilli pasta, the gruyere cheese, and the woodsy truffle mushrooms. Flatbreads are another great starter or snack with drinks, topped with either Buffalo style chicken, sausage and bacon, or the simple Margarita flatbread topped with mozzarella, arugula, and grape tomatoes.

South of the Border entrées include warm, crisp quesadillas filled with Monterey jack and cheddar cheeses, pico de gallo and sour cream on the side ($11). You can add chicken, steak, or shrimp to your quesadilla for a small charge and these quesadillas make a great appetizer for two to four, or an entrée for one. The fish tacos were outstanding, filled with a generous fillet of mahi-mahi that was delicately battered and fried, dressed with cabbage, red onion and cilantro slaw, and chipotle cream sauce. With three to an order, there was plenty for lunch the next day and they heated up crispy in the toaster oven. Chicken tacos and “al Pastor” tacos with marinated pork are also popular. Come try the new fajitas on the menu sizzling with juicy steak, chicken, shrimp, or vegetables.

The salads at Katch Astoria are substantial enough to be a meal or you can share one with the table. We loved the warm kale and Brussel sprout salad, flecked with dried cherries, pistachio nuts, with a lemony vinaigrette dressing. Pair a salad with one of their new sandwiches such as the Cuban sandwich, Philly cheesesteak sandwich, or quinoa burger, made in house.

Entrées include fall-off-the-bone baby back ribs, slow-roasted for three hours and finished with their own barbecue sauce. Steak frites with their famous hand-cut fries is a classic, executed very well here at Katch Astoria. Brick chicken is pure comfort food made with free range chicken, garlic, lemon, spinach, chorizo and potatoes. Lagunitas IPA-battered fish and chips are golden, crunchy and light, and the Katch of the day might be broiled tilapia, prepared with lemon and white wine.

Katch’s weekend brunch is served from 11am to 4pm, with dinner service after that. Menu items include lemon ricotta pancakes, avocado toast on 7 grain bread, shrimp and grits, steak and eggs, and wagyu beef sliders, amongst other tempting choices.

For dessert, try the decadent chocolate lava cake with Guinness ice cream…yes the Guinness gives this ice cream a wonderful flavor and texture to complement the rich chocolate cake. Churros with caramel sauce are very popular too.
