Crowley: Population Bureau Nominee’s Comments On Immigrants ‘Vile’

House Democratic Caucus Chair Joe Crowley (D-Queens, the Bronx) issued the following statement on the nomination of Ronald Mortensen to serve as assistant secretary of state for the Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration:

“Mr. Mortensen’s racist, vile, and disparaging comments against immigrants and refugees disqualifies him from serving our government in any capacity. This appointment is yet another clear demonstration from President Trump that he is intent on advancing an agenda completely contrary to America’s values.”

The Bureau of Population, Refugees and Migration’s stated role is to provide “aid and sustainable solutions for refugees, victims of conflict and stateless people around the world.” Its mission is to provide “protection, ease suffering, and resolve the plight of persecuted and uprooted people around the world on behalf of the American people by providing life-sustaining assistance.”

A fellow at the Center for Immigration Studies, an organization labeled a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, Mortensen wrote an article for The Hill entitled “Most Illegal Aliens Routinely Commit Felonies.”

Mortensen needs Senate confirmation for the position.
