Aviation Rescue Of Two Kayakers In Jamaica Bay

Police responded to a report of two people that fell off their kayaks in Jamaica Bay on Saturday, May 26, at approximately 5:20 pm, within the confines of the 100th Precinct. NYPD Aviation Unit 18 responded, and upon arrival, observed a man in the water, struggling while holding on to two kayaks. Air/Sea Rescue Helicopter 22 also responded, and deployed two NYPD SCUBA divers into the water to retrieve the victim.  The man informed the officers that his friend’s kayak tipped over 15 minutes prior to aviation’s arrival and pointed out where he was last seen. Once the officers lifted the man into Aviation 22 with the rescue basket, both divers were then hoisted back into the aircraft. The second victim was observed in the water, and both divers redeployed and placed him into the rescue basket. Once all parties were safely on the aircraft, the victims were transported to Floyd Bennett Field where they were assessed by EMS and refused medical attention.
