Smoke Forces Evacuation Of N, W Train In LIC

Dozens of straphangers crowded onto a Long Island City subway platform during the morning rush hour on May 1, after they were forced to evacuate a smoky, Manhattan-bound train.

Firefighters evacuated straphangers from cars on the smoke-filled “W’ train at about 8 a.m. on May 1, an FDNY spokesperson said. Frustrated straphangers said the train started vibrating and making loud noises just before cars filled with smoke.

Trains on the N and W elevated lines were rerouted to express tracks for approximately one hour while fire officials investigated the condition, the spokesperson said.

Both lines were restored to normal service just before 9 a.m.

Straphangers evacuated by firefighters at the 39th Avenue subway station in Long Island City were forced to wait on line for an MTA –Q-102 bus to Queens Plaza. The Q-102 bus runs along 31st Street in Long Island Coty, underneath the elevated N and W lines.
