Elected Officials Hold Greek Independence Celebration

NYC Council Member Costa Constantinides’ celebration of Greek Independence Day held at City Hall included performances by the Academy of Hellenic Paideia Dance Troupe. NYC Council Members Costa Constantinides and Paul Vallone, in conjunction with City Council Speaker Corey Johnson, celebrated the anniversary of Greek Independence. The celebration honored Greek Americans who have dedicated themselves to serving their communities.

The Council Members honored:

• Anthoula Katsimatides, former Assistant Vice President for Family Relations of the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation; board member of the 9/11 Memorial and Museum; President of the Johnny and Mikey Foundation for Life; actress and COSMOS FM Radio Host

• Nikos P. Mouyiaris, Founder of Hellenic American Leadership Council, board member of Pancyprian Association of America, and founder & CEO of MANA Products

• Jerry Filippidis, president of the 109th Precinct Community Council, board member of the Masonic Toys for Tots Foundation, co-owner of ARES Printing & Packaging

• George Filippidis, Executive Vice President of the Masonic Toys for Tots Foundation, co-owner of ARES Printing & Packaging

• Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Whitestone

Council Member Paul Vallone honored contributions of Greek Americans at the Greek Independence Day celebration in City Hall. of civic engagement throughout the community. Serving as important role models, they have dedicated their time to charitable causes, including supporting  post-September 11 recovery and rebuilding efforts, promoting leadership and entrepreneurship within the Greek American community, and advocating for use of renewable energy and recycled materials. The honorees have also supported philanthropic organizations around the world, including humanitarian efforts at orphanages and cancer research at hospitals.

As the first Greek-Cypriot-American elected to the City Council, there is also special pride in having the opportunity to honor Greek Americans who have worked to promote Greek cultural heritage.   I thank Speaker Johnson and my colleague, Council Member Vallone, for honoring the contributions of Greek Americans to our city.”
