The Ridgewood YMCA Annual Campaign Kickoff Breakfast featured a wonderful program packed with youth program participants showcasing their talents through cheerleading and karate performances and a personalized song and performance by the pre-kindergarten students.

The Y provides essential programs and services to deserving members of the community: young people, working families, single parents, immigrants, older adults, and anyone who aspires to lead a better life.

Nashira Lynton, Ridgewood resident and Y member shared her story about how her son’s participation in the Y’s free Afterschool program provides much-needed childcare while she works to earn a living to support her family. “Joining the YMCA influenced the way we view health, fitness and friendships. While there may be many benefits to attending the Y, like group classes, family events and the sauna, the most impactful has been the friendships formed,” she said in her speech at the Annual Campaign Kickoff.

Lynton’s membership has also enabled her to access other youth programs at the Y for her Theresa Geraci, a volunteer from the Ridgewood Y Board of Managers, introducing the Annual Campaign.

She said, “It’s amazing getting to watch my son meet up with his best friend and enjoy Fit Kids Class together or hang out at Y Kids Zone. It’s also comforting to know (that) when you are not attending or have been gone for awhile, these friends will reach out and check in to make sure you’re doing okay. Summer of 2017 was my youngest Nathaniel’s first year in camp. Because of multiple food allergies and asthma, I was slightly concerned. The availability of the staff and counselors helped alleviate the stress.”

Lynton went on to describe the positive impact that joining the Y had on her family’s health, “Health is now a priority in our household. Before the Y, we would spend more time sitting around at home. I find the Y challenges me to not only be fit, but to continuously step out my comfort zone when it comes to my health.”

Financial gifts to the Y will help Ridgewood YMCA advance programming and services that support youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Most importantly, gifts to the Ridgewood YMCA make a direct impact on residents in Ridgewood, Glendale, Maspeth and Middle Village.

Volunteers affirmed the importance of supporting community and each other by supporting the Y’s annual campaign. Campaign leadership is comprised of outstanding YMCA volunteers from throughout the local community. This year Theresa Geraci, Peter DeLucia Jr., Edward Allie, and all board members and YMCA volunteers are working with the Ridgewood YMCA to meet its Annual Campaign goal of raising $60,000.

Our Annual Campaign helps provide our families and kids with the support they need to overcome adversity and thrive,” said Geraci. “Please join us as we work together and support one another to make our community stronger.”
