SHAREing & CAREing: Healthy Practices, Self-Care, Giving Back

Chair Stretches & Guided Meditation for Opening the Heart

SHAREing & CAREing (S&C) announced Chair Stretches & Guided Meditation for Opening the Heart will be held on February 14, at 2 pm at Queens Public Library, Elmhurst. They said, “We will learn and practice meditation and stress management techniques, including stretches that you can do in a chair. Because this is Valentineʼs Day, and February is Healthy Heart Awareness Month, we will focus particularly on chair stretches and guided imagery that celebrate, open, stretch and heal our hardworking, ever-loving hearts. Come to relieve stress, and feel more calm, open and confident. All are welcome but please register!” To register, email merrylr@shareing-careing.org.

Talking Winter Skin Care at SHAREing & CAREing’s January Support Group Meeting

For their first support group for 2018, special guest, Ericka Smith, a former beauty consultant from Walgreens, made a presentation on Winter Skin Care. She provided them with great skin care tips and answered participantsʼ specific questions. She offered simple, useful tips such as applying moisturizer with upward strokes (to defy the pull of gravity), to the importance of wearing sunscreen, especially in winter, when sun bounces off the snow and can increase the radiation that impacts one’s face.

Ericka’s mother, RN Fran Smith, has assisted with S&C’s high school cancer education outreach programs for many years. “Ericka shares her mother’s passion for helping us take better care of ourselves. The impact of taking actions on our own behalf—whether it’s scheduling a mammogram that you have been putting off, to finding a skin care routine that has you feeling a little brighter—can all add up to increased vitality, confidence and self-esteem,” they said.

“This support group was a lovely, pampering experience during what can be a cold and dark time of year. Ericka’s presentation was well received and left members feeling pampered and with increased sense of well-being.”

Special Thanks to the Maspeth High School Community

On January 23, 2018 Anna Kril, Executive Director and founding member of SHAREing & CAREing, and Merryl Reichbach, LCSW, Program Manager attended a small ceremony held by Maspeth High School to present S&C with the proceeds from their cancer fundraiser. They said, “We are proud of our longstanding relationship with Maspeth High School. Our Be a Friend to Your Mother cancer education program is an annual tradition at this school and all students are required to attend as part of their health and physical education requirement.”

Maspeth High School states their vision is “to have our students become leaders in all fields of personal endeavors through academia and to be physically, emotionally and intellectually healthy with determination and compassion.” S&C said, “They surely have demonstrated all of these qualities, particularly leadership and compassion, by fundraising on behalf of those in the community impacted by cancer. The donated funds will be used by SHAREing & CAREing to provide services, including counseling, wellness programs, navigation and financial assistance to those in our community impacted by cancer.”

SHAREing & CAREING, is located at 45-02 Ditmars Boulevard, Suite 1016, Astoria. Their telephone number is 718-777-5766.
