Police Nab Gunman In Botched Attack

Police in Nassau County have arrested a 23-year-old gunman who opened fire near the Queensbridge Houses on January 26, striking a 28-year-old woman who had just exited a nearby subway station.

Jamal Brown, who goes by the street name, “Snooze Brown,” was arrested on January 28 in Inwood, Long Island by police at Nassau County’s 4th Precinct.

Police said Jaivon Mitchner exited the 21st Street-Queensbridge subway station at about 6:55 am on January 26 and walked three blocks to 10th Street and 41st Avenue, where she was struck once in the stomach by gunfire intended for another woman.

Brown was targeting his 19-year-old former girlfriend when he fired off the shots that struck Mitchner.

“He fired three rounds from a .9mm pistol, one of which traveled three blocks before striking Michner,” a police source said. “He was in the middle of a dispute with his intended target and ended up shooting the wrong woman.”

Mitchner, who lives in the Queensbridge Houses, was taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital where she was treated and released.

“The victim suffered minor injuries,” the source said. “The shot traveled three blocks and lost much of its velocity before striking the woman, or she would have certainly been more seriously injured.”

Charges have not been announced pending Brown’s extradition to Queens County, authorities said.—Liz Goff
