Events At Astoria Bookshop

We’ve gotten through the start of 2018, and we still continue on through this winter. Astoria Bookshop has a lot of exciting events coming up. Come test your wizarding knowledge, read steamy passages from your favorite romance novel or work-inprogress (drinks are on Astoria Bookshop, don’t worry), and finally, start getting pumped for “A Wrinkle In Time” with us! Below is a list of upcoming events for February, and remember that you can always see the full calendar on their website www.astoriabookshop.com. RSVP on Facebook for all events and programs.

Storytelling Show: Thursday, February 8, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Come to the Bookshop ready to tell a five-minute true story about something that happened to you. Don’t worry about sticking to a theme—you don’t have to. Participants’ names will be pulled from a basket, open-mic style. And of course, non-storytellers are welcome to join the audience! For over three and one half years Astoria Bookshop has had performances from authors with big book deals, stand up comics with national TV credits, The Moth GrandSLAM performers and complete and total strangers who had a story to tell. (Free)

Black History Month Storytime: Sunday, February 11, 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm. Join Astoria Bookshop for a very special Black History Month-themed children’s storytime. Come to the bookshop and learn about Harriet Tubman, Maya Angelou, bell hooks (Gloria Jean Watkins), and more, as Astoria Bookshop dedicates their storytime to Black voices and narratives for children of all ages. Hosted by David Lawson

Steamy Storytime & Open Mic: Tuesday, February 13, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Astoria Bookshop is getting in the mood for Valentine’s Day with an X-rated storytime for adults only. They’ll be reading aloud from some of their favorite erotica, bodice rippers, and hey, maybe even a little “50 Shades.” It takes two (or sometimes more) to tango, so don’t be afraid to jump up and read or even share something of your own. Ditch the Tinder date and let Astoria Bookshop buy you a drink; “We always call you back.” XOXO, The Astoria Bookshop.

Feminist Book Club Event: “Women & Power” – Wednesday, February 21, 7:00 pm – 8:00 pm

Join Astoria Bookshop for a special evening discussion group as they talk about Mary Beard’s bold manifesto, described as “a cultural history of misogyny.”

“A Wrinkle in Time” Storytime: Sunday, February 25, 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Join Astoria Bookshop to read an excerpt from Madeleine L’Engle’s groundbreaking science fiction and fantasy classic “A Wrinkle In Time.” In celebration of Ava DuVernay’s movie adaptation, Astoria Bookshop would like to give you the opportunity to relive the joy and wonder of the novel with your friendly booksellers at the Astoria Bookshop before the nationwide release of the film on March 9. To make things even more exciting, Astoria Bookshop has been given a small allotment of tickets to an advance screening of the film, taking place on March 6. Attendees of their Storytime will have their names entered into a lottery to win FREE advance screening tickets to the movie. Winners will be chosen at the end of the reading.
