Second Homeless Man Found Dead In Sunnyside

Police responding to a 911 call on January 20th found a homeless man unconscious and unresponsive outside an encampment area near 34th Street and Queens Boulevard in Sunnyside, an NYPD spokesperson said.

Cops found Ivan Avilla, 40, dead outside the homeless encampment at about 8:30 a.m. on January 20th, police said. Avilla had no apparent signs of trauma and was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Avilla’s death came just five days after another homeless man was found dead in Sunnyside, police said.

The unidentified man was found dead on January 15th, at the Thomas P. Noonan, Jr., playground at 43rd Street and Greenpoint Avenue, according to police.

Investigations are underway in both deaths, police said. The city medical examiner will determine cause of death of both men.
