The sporting life of baseball coach Tom Gamboa has been preserved for history in a new autobiography co-authored by a young Forest Hills author.

Twenty-six year old Dave Russell teamed up with the former Major League Baseball (MLB) scout who discovered Mets pitcher Jesse Orosco, and scouted St. Louis Cardinals outfielder and Hall of Famer Ozzie Smith, to write this wonderful account of Gamboa’s life in the minor and major leagues in the newly released “Tom Gamboa: My Life In Baseball.”

The book is packed with never-before published photographs and moves, along with a good pace as Gamboa recounts his life as an MLB scout, and the joy and adventure in finding the new talent who changed the face of baseball forever. The book, of course, begins with memories of his childhood and brings the reader seamlessly through his career in AAA baseball and the majors with great detail that is sure to entertain any baseball fan.

Gamboa coached first and third base for the Chicago Cubs and Kansas City Royals and also was a manager in the minor leagues, including for AAA teams like the Toledo Mud Hens in the International League, and the Albuquerque Dukes in the Pacific Coast League. In September 2017, Gamboa was the bench coach for the Israeli national baseball team at the 2017 World Baseball Classic in the main tournament in South Korea and Japan.

Gamboa is known also for an infamous moment in MLB history when in 2002, a father and son attacked him during a Royals vs. White Sox game. Gamboa was coaching third base when the duo attacked him for no reason from behind, sending him to ground in fury of punches and kicks.

Gamboa is also the former manager of the Brooklyn Cyclones.

The book’s forward is written by Doug Glanville, who was a fledgling player stuck in the minors until Gamboa took him under his wing. Glanville went on to play for the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies.

The book’s co-author, David Russell, is a graduate of St. John’s University and Queensborough Community College, and is a lifelong resident of Forest Hills.

“I wanted to take people behind the scenes with someone who is not a household name, but is a respected and experienced figure in major league baseball,” said Russell.

Russell is currently writing another baseball book due out next year.

Published by McFarland, “Tom Gamboa: My Life In Baseball” by Tom Gamboa with David Russell, is available on amazon.com and barnesandnoble.com for $29.95. It is also available as an ebook.
