City Issues Rules For Christmas Tree Curbside Pickup

If your Christmas tree is beginning to resemble Charlie Brown’s, it’s time to remove the tinsel and place the tree curbside for recycling by the city Department of Sanitation (DSNY).

DSNY will remove Christmas trees left curbside from Tuesday, January 2 to Saturday, January 13, officials said.

You must follow these rules for curbside pickup:

  • Do not wrap or place trees in plastic bags
  • Remove the tree from the tree stand
  • Remove all tinsel, ornaments and lights
  • Trees must be placed curbside within the 12-day collection period for DSNY collection

Trees not collected by January 13 may be left curbside and will not receive a violation, DSNY officials said. Remaining trees will be collected as regular household waste.

All trees collected by DSNY will be chipped and processed into mulch, which will be spread in city parks, community gardens and ball fields, officials said. Trees placed at curbside that contain ornaments, tinsel and other decorative items cannot be mulched, and will be removed as regular trash.
