Payless Shoes Closing Ditmars Store

By Liz Goff
The Payless Shoe Store at 22-48 31st Street in Astoria will be closing its doors on January 3, a company spokesperson confirmed.

Workers said the Ditmars store is a victim of a front office decision to shutter approximately 900 of its 4,400 stores as the company reemerges from a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing.

Payless filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in April, citing low sales due to online competition.

A Payless spokesperson did not disclose plans for two other stores located on Steinway Street.

Workers at a Payless store at 30-70 Steinway Street said they fear they will lose their jobs when the company’s lease expires in June 2018.

Long Island real estate management and development firm Malachite Services recently acquired the parcel at 30-70 Steinway Street for $2.95 million. Malachite Services has not released plans for development of the site.

Workers at a Payless store at 30-73 Steinway Street said they are “more confident” that they would not be facing pink slips in the near future.
