Council Member Costa Constantinides, Assembly Members Aravella Simotas and Brian Barnwell, and NYS Senator Michael Gianaris gathered on December 21 with over 100 winter coats donated by community members for families in need.

Coats were collected at the elected officials’ offices as part of a holiday season coat drive. The lightly used winter coats were donated to New York Cares.

Constantinides said, “As temperatures continue to decrease throughout this winter, we must keep in mind that many New Yorkers endure the freezing outdoors with no relief. That’s why we coordinated this coat drive with New York Cares. We thank everyone who contributed to a warm, healthy, and generous-spirited holiday season for all New Yorkers. I thank Assembly Members Simotas and Barnwell and State Senator Gianaris for their partnership.”

Simotas said, “Our coat drive was a huge success, thanks to western Queens residents with big hearts and generous souls. All these warm coats are the undeniable proof that ‘love thy neighbor as thyself’ still has meaning.”

Barnwell said, “I’m proud to join my colleagues in government to help people stay warm. These coats can help save people’s lives. Thank you to all those who donated.”

“Thank you to everyone in our community who participated in our annual coat drive,” said Senator Gianaris. “The holiday season is a great time to give back and it is always important to remember those who may be less fortunate.”

Constantinides worked further to help families in need enjoy the holidays. Community members donated over 150 toys at his office, which were wrapped and distributed to children by Urban Upbound. He also collected donations of toiletries that were distributed to clients of Reality House, a veterans’ residence and outpatient treatment facility for individuals who have experienced substance abuse.

Constantinides said, “As we enjoy the holidays with family, many children grow up without the opportunity to open Christmas or holiday gifts. Many New Yorkers do not have access to everyday supplies, including toiletries. I thank all who participated in brightening the holidays for families in our poorest neighborhoods. We appreciate everyone who helped those less fortunate.”
