Chase Closes Steinway Street Branch

By Liz Goff
Chase Bank closed its Steinway Street branch on December 14, and is advising customers to utilize the Chase branch at 31-05 30th Avenue for further transactions.

Chase shut down a branch at 32-12 Broadway in 2015 and consolidated it with another branch at 39-11 Broadway, just five blocks away.

A Chase employee who was transferred from the Steinway Street branch said the recent closures were inevitable, “because Chase opened too many branches too close to each other years ago.” Online banking has changed the way people now manage their accounts, the employee said. “You don’t keep a business open if you don’t have enough customers.”

Chase officials did not offer a reason for the closures.

A 31-year-old Astoria man was charged with robbing a Chase branch at 25-91 Steinway Street in August.

Sergio Dasalvo is facing felony robbery charges for the heist that netted him close to $46,000. Dasalvo, who lives with his wife and children just blocks from the bank branch, pleaded not guilty to the charges at his arraignment at Queens Criminal Court.
