Woodside On The Move’s Christmas Tree Lighting

The Board of Directors and staff at Woodside on the Move thanked the Woodside community for their support at the Annual Tree Lighting event.

Hundreds gathered in Woodside on Saturday, December 2 on a beautiful fall (yes, it was still fall) evening as the crowd and tree were blessed by Father Rodnev Lapommeray of St. Sebastian’s Church. Majority Leader of the NYC Council Jimmy Van Bramer led the countdown to watch the beautiful tree glow at the center of Sohncke Square. They thanked other distinguished guests, including State Senator Michael Gianaris, Assembly Member Brian Barnwell, Chair of Queens Community Board #2 Denise Keehan-Smith and Executive Director Judith Zangwill of Sunnyside Community Services for being in attendance as well.

The tree was generously donated by Donovan’s Pub.

Lighting a Christmas tree in Sohncke Square has been a long standing tradition of Woodside on the Move for many years, in which they provide gifts to over 300 Woodside youth who anxiously wait for Santa. Prior to Santa’s arrival, children from P.S. 11, P.S. 152 and P.S. 361 serenaded the crowd with song and dance. Once Santa arrived, he posed for pictures with the children to the delight of their parents.

In addition to the tree lighting and gifts from Santa, there was a raffle giveaway of a 50” television, a dinner for two at Noma’s Restaurant, a $50 gift certificate for classes at United Tae Kwon Do (Northern Boulevard) and a $50 gift certificate for Woodside Fencing.

A number of people and area businesses contributed to this this year’s Annual Tree Lighting, including Donovan’s Pub, Pizza Boy II, Rico Pan Bakery, Noma’s Restaurant, Woodside Fencing, United Tae Kwon Do of Woodside, Matthijssen Business Systems, All in One Entertainment, Frankie’s Carnival, Art My Face Entertainment and Peking BBQ, with a special thanks to Majority Leader of the NYC Council Jimmy Van Bramer for making this event possible.
