Photos Sneeha Bose With so many movies coming out during the holiday season, one stands out the most— "Star Wars: The Last Jedi.” The next chapter in the Star Wars series already hit theaters on December 15, but the hype is far from over. The eighth episode in the decades-long saga, “The Last Jedi” has been one of the most anticipated films in 2017 and is the second part to the sequel trilogy of the series, with the original trilogy being released in the 80s and the prequels in the late 90s and early 2000s. This movie follows Episode VII, “The Force Awakens,” which was released in winter 2015. This sequel trilogy reintroduces audiences to Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo, along with a fresh cast of heroes, Rey, Finn, and Poe Dameron. Opposing them is villain Kylo Ren, who (spoiler alert!) is the fallen darksider son of Leia and Han Solo. Fans have been buzzing with excitement for the last two years, waiting for the next installment of the culturally iconic series, and now, it’s finally here. Astoria had its own special premiere of “The Last Jedi” with an Opening Night Fan Event at UA Kaufman Astoria Cinemas 14 and RPX on December 14. Those attending were among the first to see the new movie, and were treated with exclusive content, such as collectible cards and posters. The same day, the theater also held a Star Wars double feature, showing Episode VII before premiering Episode VIII to those who wanted a reminder of the last movie. With the return of the franchise, Star Wars is everywhere, so don’t be afraid to get caught up in the frenzy. From Toys “R” Us to Target, any store claiming to have the best gifts for the holiday season will have some of this merchandise on their shelves. Top toys this year include stuffed porgs (the newest fuzzy creatures to come from the world of Star Wars), figurines of favorite characters and droids such as BB-8, and the ever-present lightsabers. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” will be in theaters for a while, so take some time this holiday season to go watch the movie with friends and family. And as always, may the force be with you.—Sneeha Bose
