Man Charged In Police Car Hit-Run

Police last week arrested an armed, 22-year-old Rockaway man who slammed his black BMW into the side of a police car in Long Island City on December 13, and then fled the scene.

Police said the officer was driving on Northern Boulevard and 39th Street (Steinway Street) at about 8:50 a.m. on December 13, when Kevin Giraldo-Cuesta struck the police cruiser, causing significant damage to the passenger side of the vehicle.

The officer caught up with Giraldo-Cuesta at 39th Street and Skillman Avenue in Sunnyside, where he pulled over the BMW. Giraldo-Cuesta fled on foot with the officer in pursuit, ditching the BMW at 41st Street and 50th Avenue.

Police arrested Giraldo-Cuesta just after midnight on December 14, an NYPD spokesperson said.

Giraldo-Cuesta was arraigned at Queens Criminal Court on charges including criminal possession of a weapon, harassment and reckless endangerment for putting the life of the police officer at risk.

The officer was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell Medical Center with minor neck and back injuries. —Liz Goff
